The suburb began as a surveyed grid village in 1838, and a couple of its oldest buildings still stand: St James Anglican Church from 1867 and St Gertrude's Catholic Church from 1884.

The houses came much later. Most of what people live in now went up through the post-war building push, low-set detached brick-veneer and double-brick homes with a scattering of older fibro.

Alongside those detached homes sit some semi-detached places and later townhouse infill, but the older stock is where the pressure and pipe problems concentrate.

Corroded internal pipework is the number one call. Decades of rust inside an old galvanised line eats away the bore until pressure fades or the pipe simply splits.

Rusty or discoloured water at a tap is often the first sign a supply line is near the end of its life.

You see it most on the established streets off The Horsley Drive, Polding Street and Victoria Street, where the post-war housing runs thickest.

Split braided flexi hoses are the other constant, usually under a kitchen or vanity where a renovation left the original connector in place while everything around it was replaced.

Older clay and earthenware drains crack and take in roots right through the year, well beyond storm season, which is why blocked-line callouts here rarely wait for heavy rain to arrive.

Storms bring the third wave. These streets drain into the Prospect Creek and Orphan School Creek catchment, and the worst flooding on record came in February 1990, with another major event in February 2011.

Heavy downpours still surcharge stormwater and yard drains, so a blocked drain after a big storm is routine work for us rather than a surprise.
